Sports rise up the table came to an abrupt halt as a Dave Knaggs
inspired Redmires gained their first win since October. Knaggs gave
Redmires an early lead and Mikey Taylor doubled it, before missing
another chance to extend it further. Sam Read pulled one back before
half time, but after the break Knaggs hit his second into the far corner
before setting up a
fourth for Nick Hickson’s diving header. Nick Owen pulled a second one
back from the penalty spot, but Redmires lead was never really
threatened.

Official view: In
the CBC Premier, leaders Civil Service needed two Lee Wild strikes to
see off Redmires. Wes Bamford gave Service the lead against the run of
play near the end of a first half. Redmires weren’t having the best of
luck and after having a strong claim for a penalty turned down by the
referee, midfielder Nick Hickson missed four glorious chance to bring
his side level. Service introduced Wild at half time to shake things up
and he repaid his managers faith in him with two goals to keep his side
in control.

Official view: The
all CBC Premier tie saw Redmires take the lead at The Vine when a good
move was finished off by Dave Knaggs. Dan Bateman hit a post as The Vine
strove for an equaliser and it was Bateman that flicked the ball on for
Davidson to eventually draw them level before half time. The tie looked
to be going Redmires way again when Knaggs was brought down in the area
and Dave Elliott scored from the spot, but Davidson took the tie to
extra time when he raced onto Shaun Blythe’s through ball to score.
Redmires started extra time the strongest and hit a post before missing
two sitters and they paid for it when Davidson completed his hat-trick
with a great solo run and he confirmed their semi final place when added
a fourth after Bateman beat the offside trap before squaring the ball to
him.

Sports were quick off the mark at Redmires with Nick Owen scoring after
a mistake by the Karl Taylor in the Redmires goal. Sam Read added a
second after just eight minutes, but after that it was Redmires that
dominated play, hitting the woodwork three times. They were hit on the
break though as Read picked the ball up on the edge of his own area
before racing away to leave a static defence in his wake and score his
second. Redmires did eventually pull one back through Dave Knaggs, but
it wasn’t enough to change the game.

FINE
PERFORMANCE NOT A VINE RESULT
We
knew we were in for a tough game at League front runners The Vine on
their small school pitch at Westfield. We started off very well and
scored after 15 minutes when Nick Hickson found himself in the right
place in front of goal again. We suffered an early blow when Dave Booth
had to come off with an injured knee, to be replaced by Sean Downing up
front. We were playing the better football in the first half whilst
always having to deal with Vines long ball game. We maybe should have
had a penalty but the referee adjudged the ball to have hit the
defenders hand accidently. We looked the more likely to score but had to
be content to go in at half time one up. HALF TIME 1-0. Kicking downhill
The Vine began to get on top and a speculative shot struck Dave
Elliot’s arm when he was unsighted, but unlike our shout in the first
half the referee gave a penalty which gave Vine the chance they wanted.
We then had to withstand a Stoke like barrage of long balls and throw
ins and it was from one of these Vine took the lead. Big Sam Barthram,
making his first start of the season and having a good game in midfield
had to come off with a back pull and we brought Mikey Taylor on up front
and we again got on top and Downing picked out Dave Knaggs to score from
close in and Knaggs also had a good chance to add a third but just
fluffed his shot under pressure. We were still under a lot of long ball
pressure despite playing the better football and from one of
Vine’s corners the inswinger deceived Karl Taylor to curl into the far
corner. On balance we did not deserve to lose this game and hope we can
play as well again on this same pitch in the cup in two weeks time.
Official view: Nick
Hickson scored from close range to give Redmires a half time lead at The
Vine, but the home side levelled when Chris Shirtcliffe’s long throw
was adjudged to have been handled in the area and Rikki Davidson rifled
home the penalty. Andrew Marsh then won the ball on the half-way line
before beating two men and setting Davidson up for his second, but Shaun
Downing crossed for Dave Knaggs to level for Redmires. Both had chances,
but a winner eventually went The Vine’s way when Danny Seaman’s
corner eluded everyone and found the net.
Redmires 3 Stannngton
Village 3 (League, 13th November)
TWO
POINTS LOST RATHER THAN ONE GAINED
We
had looked forward to playing our old rivals Stannington Village
particularly as they were near the top of the League having a perfect
unbeaten record of five wins. They had beaten us easily in the first
match of the season and this was the chance to prove our improvement and
show that result to be false. Things couldn’t have started worse for
us really when after ten minutes a hopeful shot by them was sliced off
centre back Luke Siggs left foot to leave Karl Taylor helpless. It
didn’t deter our effort however and we scored a great equaliser when
Nick Hickson yet again rose above the defence to head home a Dave Knaggs
corner to make his score four headers in the last four matches. Mikey
Taylor was causing them problems with his good ball control and pace and
when he got through and just about to shoot their centre back slide
tackled him from behind bringing him down. As he was the last defender,
the referee had no option but to send him off. Knaggs stepped up to take
the penalty but the keeper made a good save. We continued to have the
better of the early exchanges and whilst they looked dangerous on
occasions we took the lead when Hickson again found a good position to
score from close range. HALF
TIME 2-1. Whilst
it looked like we were in poll position against their ten men and we did
get on top for a while we missed a couple of chances and this proved
costly as the lad who had scored four against in the first match eluded
three of our players to hit a great left foot past Taylor to equalise.
We then made a change bringing off Sean Downing with Dave Booth up front
and Taylor moving to the right wing. The move paid off when Booth was on
hand to tap in from close range to put us ahead. We went close to
extending our lead when Dave Eliot and Booth got in each others way for
a header which just went over the bar. Village had a couple of near
misses but it looked like we would hold on, however they managed to get
a late equaliser when a speculative shot went through several bodies and
deceived big Karl. It was a shame we didn’t win against possibly the
best team in the division but it showed the progress we have made since
that opening day of the season. Ben Palmer had his best game of the
season against his old team and our defence looked solid enough.
Official view: It
proved to be a very good day for Service as Stannington Village also
dropped their first points and only a late Josh Coulson strike saved
them from defeat at Redmires. After taking an early lead when Tom
Donlan’s cross was turned into his own net by Luke Siggs, Stannington
were pegged back as Nick Hickson headed home a Dave Knaggs corner and
they might look upon it as a point gained rather than two lost as they
were then reduced to ten men after Jack Mylnek saw red for a mis-timed
tackle on Mikey Taylor when he through on goal. The resulting penalty
was brilliantly saved by Nathan Ryan, but he was beaten soon afterwards
by Hickson’s second of the game. Although Jon Wall bent an equaliser
into the top corner, Village’s unbeaten record looked as if it would
go when David Booth put Redmires in front again, but they rescued a
point when Josh Coulson fired through a crowd of players to beat the
unsighted keeper.

REMEMBER
REMEMBER THE 6TH OF NOVEMBER
We
had to make a late change to the starting line up when full back Steve
Vale failed to show moving Luke Siggs to right full back and Dale White
starting in Vale’s place. We couldn’t have had a better start when
in our first attack Sean Downing caught the ball just right on the edge
of the area to beat the keeper. PL were playing quite well, with the G3
pitch suiting their passing game and they looked the better side for a
while. It was no surprise when they equalised 15 minutes later, but we
looked very dangerous when we got through their defence. With ten
minutes left in the half, we were very surprised when the referee
stopped play and gave the keeper a red card for insulting behaviour and
in addition awarded us a penalty. Dave Elliot, who, with regular penalty
taker Dave Knaggs off the field with a pulled hamstring, took the kick
and made no mistake.
Young Mikey Taylor was having his first full start and justified his
selection with a brilliant strike from outside the box which flew into
the roof of the net, giving the keeper no chance. We continued to work
hard and White in particular was having a good game against their danger
man. Elliot and James Kirkham were playing well against their two big
strikers, but PL kept fighting hard. However another good move resulted
in Nick Hickson scoring with his head for the third week in succession. HALF
TIME 1-4. In
the second half, PL kept battling but were finding the loss of their
keeper hard although his substitute did well. Ben Palmer who had a good
game in midfield had one spectacular drive which hit the bar. They had a
couple of decent chances but spurned them and we were able to make a
substitution with big Sam Barthram coming on for the last half an hour.
PL managed to pull one back but their number 7 who had been yellow
carded for a two footed tackle earlier was sent from the field after
another bad tackle and this gave us even more control of the game. They
had several free kicks on the edge of the box which they failed to
convert but when we got one, Barthram dinked the ball through the wall
and the clever spin he put on it made the keeper spill it and Rob
Gardiner who had come on for Knaggs was on it like a flash to put it
past the keeper. A strange game in a way with several things going our
way but the result was never in doubt.
Official view: The
League have removed their match report for the above game.
Redmires 5 Yew Tree 0 (League,
30th October)
TREE
CUT DOWN TO SIZE
After
last weeks result against Stocksbridge there was more of an air of
confidence about the team and Yew Tree were without their main striker,
so things looked promising. We took a while to get into stride and the
first goal seemed a long time coming, but it was from a very good free
kick from Dave Elliot right in front of their keep which was well back
headed in by Nick Hickson who once again was in the right place to
score. We started to settle down and played much better but didn’t add
further to our score in the first half. Yew Tree failed to trouble big
Karl Taylor and we should have added a further goal to our tally. HALF
TIME 1-0. Dave Knaggs who had had a couple of attempts with free kicks
in the first half got a another one on the edge of their box and this
time lined it up perfectly to flight the ball past the keeper to put us
two up. We made our first substitution shortly afterwards with Mike
Taylor coming on up front to replace Dave Booth who had worked very
hard.
Taylor
was immediately into the action with some excellent runs and ball
control and he put us three up when he coolly finished a good move. Our
midfield trio of Ben Palmer, Luke Siggs and Hickson were controlling the
midfield and the game, ably supported by the full backs Steve Vale and
James O’Connell. At the back James Kirkham and Elliot, who improves
with every game, looked solid. Mikey Vella was then introduced instead
of the busy Sean Downing down the right and he combined very well with
Taylor
with a pass into the box which
Taylor
spun onto to hit number four. Vella got on the score sheet himself when
the ball fell nicely onto his right foot and he despatched it past the
keeper with aplomb. A good performance from an improving team.
Official view: Mikey
Taylor also scored twice as Redmires beat Yew Tree to climb into the top
half of the table. Nick Hickson headed Redmires into a first half lead
and Dave Knaggs expertly taken free kick extended it soon after the
break. Taylor then rounded the keeper to score his first for the club
and he quickly added his second before Michael Vella netted his first
for the club and Redmires fifth.
Stocksbridge 2 Redmires 3
(League, 23rd October)
BRIDGE
PUT IN THE STOCKS
Following
our weeks break, we were playing against Stocksbridge on their horrible
pitch at Brackon Moor a pitch we have never won on. Luckily Stocksbridge
were in an awful run of form without a win this season following their
winning the title last year. The system we played seemed to work very
well even though we were still without some players. It was nice to see
young Mikey Taylor on the bench who has come to every training session
and been to watch all our games whilst serving his suspension for a
misdemeanour for his previous club. The spirit in the team was good and
we started well on this uneven pitch and took the lead when the hard
working Nick Hickson rose to head the ball against the bar but nodded in
the rebound. Dave Knaggs was causing their right back a lot of trouble
with his pace and skill down the left and it was he who put in a great
cross for Dave Booth to rise above the defence to head the ball into the
corner. HALF
TIME 2-0.
We attacked as soon as the second half started and Knaggs cut inside the
full back to curl a right footed shot past the keeper. We continued
to dominate and Taylor came on up front and immediately looked at home,
showing some nice touches and he was a little unlucky not to nab a
couple of goals. Stocksbridge managed to make a chance late on and
caught our defence on the turn with one of their characteristic ploys
with their player driving the ball home. They then scored again and we
began to get a bit anxious and give the ball away but we managed to see
it out for a vital win which moves us up the table. Luke Siggs in his
customary role in midfield had a fine game and we looked solid
throughout the team.
Official view: Stocksbridge’s
miserable run continued when they lost 3-2 at home to Redmires. Nick
Hickson headed Redmires into an early lead and they doubled it before
half time when Dave Knaggs crossed for Dave Booth to head home. It got
worse for Steels soon after the break when Knaggs cut in from the wing
to add a third for Redmires, but Steels finally got themselves together
and Adam Todd pulled one back before Wayne Hughes gave Redmires an
uncomfortable last few minutes.
Arundel Ex Servicemen 1 Redmires

EX
MEN EXTRA WIN
We
started this match against Meadowhall Arundel with Dave Booth up front
and James Kirkham returning to centre half. Things went very well for us
in the first half and the best thing was the form of Karl Taylor in goal
who made a couple of blinding saves. We were bright in attack and were
by far the more likely to score. HALF TIME 0-0. We managed to hit the
post three times before Booth managed to slot one past the keeper who
was having something of a charmed life in goal. The match continued in
the same vein, with us very much on top, going close and missing a
couple of very good chances to go further ahead. Their main danger was
their centre forward, a very good dribbler with the ball but frustrating
for his team mates. It looked like we were going to hang on and it was
only in injury time that they managed to grab the equaliser much to our
chagrin. FULL TIME 1-1. In extra time, everything went their way and
with a fresh impetus they managed to get on top and we were somewhat
deflated when they managed to add three goals in the extra time. A few
of their supporters were sympathetic and said we were very unlucky not
to win as we were certainly the better team, although the final score
does not reflect that.
Official view: Although
Redmires led at Arundel Ex-Servicemens with a Dave Booth goal they
eventually went out to late goals by the home side.
Bulls Head 2 Redmires 3
(League Cup Round 2, 2nd October)
BULLSEYE
We
faced a tough draw in the League Cup 3rd Round away against the current
Division 1 leaders but we were fairly confident we could play better than
in the pre season friendly which we lost 2-1. With again lack of subs on
the bench due to injuries we decided to change the line up slightly with
Rob Gardiner starting in midfield alongside Nick Hickson and Ben Palmer.
Bulls Head opened the scoring against the run of play but we equalised
when Hickson scored with a great volley and we had much the better of
the first half with the pace of Dale White and Sean Downing causing them
problems plus the clever play of Dave Knaggs. We took the lead with a
White strike following good work by Knaggs and we continued to dominate
the match. HALF TIME 2-1. In the second half Gardiner who looked much
happier in midfield settled the match for us with a long raking strike,
and we had further chances to go ahead against our despondent opponents
but couldn’t quite seal it and to Bulls Head credit they managed to
grab a late second goal which gave us something to think about for the
last few minutes.
Official view: Redmires
knew they had a tricky tie at Division One leaders Bulls Head and they
must have feared the worst when John Kentzer put Bull
ahead, but Redmires hit back to lead at half time through Nick
Hickson’s volley and a Dale White strike. Rob Gardiner scored a third
to give Redmires some breathing space and they needed it as Kerry Dixon
netted a second for Bull in a frantic finale.
Redmires 1 Handsworth Turf
5 (League, 25th September)
FROM
HEROES TO ZEROS
We
were rather struggling for a team against old foes Handsworth Turf and
with several players unavailable for selection including Chris Cotterill
who had damaged ankle ligaments at training which looked like being a 6
to 8 week layoff, we started with James O’Connell at left back
although he was carrying a groin strain. Luke Siggs was also out with a
pulled hamstring, as was Sean Downing with an injured ankle. So with a
disrupted team we knew we would be up against it. In effect we played ok
in the first half and Dale White ran on to a cross to equalise a goal
for Handsworth. We continued to play ok but bit by bit Handsworth took
charge of the game. HALF TIME 1-1. In the second half our lack of subs
began to tell as players tired and the only change was to bring on Dave
Elliot at right back as the exhausted O’Connell had to come off.
Elliot impressed and on reflection probably should have started.
However, our defence continued to look shaky against their forwards and
it was no surprise that they went on to win the game comfortably. Mikey
Vella also had to come off and Sean Downing did his best carrying his
injury.
Official view: Handsworth
Turf celebrated their new sponsorship deal with Bramhalls Body Repair
& MOT Centre at Handsworth with their first CBC Premier win of the
season, 5-1 at Redmires. After a super Mario Esposito opener for Turf,
Redmires levelled before half time through Dale White, but after the
break Andy Stevens created a real landmark for Handsworth by netting for
them for the fourteenth consecutive season. Joe France then set Jack
Hall up for a third and Hall slid in to hit his second soon after,
before James Leesley completed the scoring in a game well refereed by
Bob Martin.
Redmires 4 Hemsworth Villa
3 (League, 18th September)
KNAGGS
BAGS FOUR
With
so many players unavailable (eight since Thursday night) we were really
struggling to get a team out to play against Villa who were themselves
were without their full squad. Young Mikey Vella came into the team for
the first time this season and Dave Booth also made his debut up front.
Vella in particular justified his selection with a good performance on
the right side of midfield and with the predatory instincts of Dave
Knaggs who had by far his best game of the season, we created plenty of
good chances. It was Knaggs who opened the scoring latching onto a
through ball by Luke Siggs to fire us into the lead. Soon afterwards we
went two up when Knaggs slotted home a penalty after being brought down
himself. We continued to dominant the match until against the run of
play their really good striker evaded James Kirkham and put them back in
the match. However, more great play by Knaggs saw him score once again
having latched on to good ball from Nick Hickson, completing a first
half hat trick. HALF TIME 3-1.
With Siggs pulling a hamstring minutes before the half time whistle, we
virtually played the second half with ten men, as we had no subs to
bring on. Villa began to fight back right from the start of the second
half and penned us back quite often. We gave them hope by conceding two
sloppy goals early in the second half and they begain to gain some
confidence, until Knaggs added his fourth goal and crown a great
performance to give us the victory in a hard fought match. A fine
performance set with the team we were able to put out and a good
reminder that the squad and not individuals will get us through in this
league.
Official view:
Redmires
Knagged to first win - Dave
Knaggs hit all his side's four goals as Redmires collected their first
win of the season in a real seven goal thriller with Hemsworth Villa.
Two instinctive strikes allowed Knaggs to put Redmires two up early on
and although Nick Owen pulled one back for Villa, a penalty allowed
Knaggs to complete his hat-trick before the break. The second half saw
Matt Bray provide a second for Owen before Alex Yule set up Liam Pigott
for an equaliser, but Villa were caught out by a ball over their defence
and Knaggs grabbed his fourth to give Redmires their first victory back
in the CBC Premier.
Southey Social 1 Redmires 0 (League,
11th September)
KIRKHAM
PAYS THE PENALTY
We
were returned to the scene of our 5-1 victory last year with hopes that
we might be able to repeat the dose. With Andy Jones back from a long
break from the team, he started the match on the bench. It was a tight
game with both defences well on top and chances few and far between. We
perhaps had the better chances in the first half with Ben Palmer just
missing with his chip and Nick Hickson going close. Luke Siggs and co
were dealing well with the clever runs of our old player Danny Lindley,
but Rob Womack another ex player looked most likely to score. HALF TIME
0-0. Ironically
it was another ex player John Mellor who put Southey in front after centre
back James Kirkham lunged into the back of their striker in the area
giving away the penalty which Mellor converted. We tried to get back
into it but we didn’t have the wherewithal to break down their defence
and in the end of a very tight game in which the pleasing factor was our
defending.
Official view:
Southey Social are celebrating their first ever win in the top flight
when a John Mellor penalty gave them the points against one of Mellor's
old clubs Redmires. Another ex-Redmires player, Danny Lindley had hit
the bar with a free-kick and Jason Slew - brother of ex-Blade Jordan
Slew - might have also scored but the one goal proved enough.
Redmires 3 Civil Service 4 (League,
8th September)
POINTS
LOST ON SERVICE
To
be addeWe were facing our second stern test in a week with a midweek
fixture against last years cup winners Civil Service and despite having
a large squad we found ourselves not being able to field our strongest
side again. We started the match lively enough and both teams went close
but it was Civil who took the lead after ten minutes and we went further
behind shortly afterwards. We didn’t lay down however and following a
good move Sean Downing put us back into before half time. We looked a
bit shaky at the back at times and the frailties shown in the second
half against Village returned.
HALF TIME 1-2. Things went much the same in the second half with Civil
having most of the pressure and it was no surprise that following our
give away goal last Sunday we again conceded direct from a corner. We
then for some reason found our form and played some decent football as
Civil took their foot off the pedal and new boy Rob Gardiner got his
first for the club and towards the end Luke Siggs managed to get the
ball over the line off one of their defenders to bring it back to 3-3.
We continued to press and if anybody was going to score it looked likely
to be us, but in the end it was Civil who broke away and managed to get
the winner ten minutes from the end. So an improved performance but with
the undoubted fact that we needed not to give away soft goals.
Official view:
Civil Service also made it
six out of six by just pipping Redmires in a seven goal thriller. Danny
Fowler headed Service in front and Gavin Wills got a fortunate second,
direct from a corner, but they took their foot off the pedal and
Redmires pulled one back through Shaun Downing. After the break Paul
Billard restored Service's two goal lead, but Redmires hit back strongly
and deservedly levelled through Rob Gardiner and Luke Siggs strikes.
Service threw on sub Adam Firth and he put them ahead again, but only
some desperate defending stopped Redmires earning a point.
Stannington Village 6 Redmires
1 (League,
4th September)
REDMIRES
HIT FOR SIX
What
looked a tricky first match on our return to the Premier Division so
proved to be true. We started off very well and shook last years Premier
runners up by taking the lead after ten minutes when Dave Knaggs
pressurised their defender and he gave their keeper no chance to put us
one up. We continued to play well and Knaggs in particular was giving
their right back a torrid time. Stannington got a free kick on the edge
of our box and much to everyones surprise their player managed to
squeeze his shot between Karl Taylor and the near post.
Taylor
said later that they took the kick before the refs whistle and he was in
the process of organising the wall. The goal stood and Village took the
lead soon after when the ball was scrambled in from close range .We
almost equalised when a flowing moved ended when a cross from the left
from Chris Cotterill was just headed wide by new boy Steve Vale. Bit
by bit Village were getting on top but we got to half time still in with
a shout. HALF TIME 2-1. Village really began to pile the pressure and
again we gave away a very sloppy goal when an inswinging corner
completely deceived
Taylor
to give them a 3-1 lead. From that
point
Village
were always in charge and managed to rattle in a three more goals to
make the match look very onesided, when it really hadn’t been. There
were some positives to take out of the match, in that Village are strong
contenders to win the league, so our opposition will not always be this
good and also the form of new players in particular Steve Vale and Rob
Gardiner who worked tirelessly on his own up front.
Official view:
The first
day of the season saw Stannington Village quickly show newly promoted
Redmires how tough life is at the top by beating them 6-1, with four of
the goals coming from new signing Jonathan Wall and the other two from
Dean Jepson.
