April 2011 Sean
Downing can score |
|
Sean
Downing has finally scored his first goal of the season. Coming in his 18th
appearance of the season, the "Striker" finally bagged after 17
games of frustration. Downing had threatened a goal in midweek, when he
finished a lovely move (after hearing the refs whistle for offside) but this
Sunday he finally got one in the 2-0 victory at Rivelin. Downing made his
debut for Redmires on the 15th October 2006 against Lord Nelson in the
League, where he scored ALL FOUR GOALS in a 4-1 win. That season he finished
with 7 goals in 18 games, his best return for the club. In 2007/08 he scored
5 in 18 games. In 2008/09 he scored 3 goals in 17 games and last season he
scored 3 goals in 17 games. With 7 games to go this season, Downing will
need to find a couple more goals to stop recording his worst scoring season
for the club. Although a goal next Sunday in the Junior Cup Final would
certainly go a long way to protect his status as a "big game goalscorer"

March 2011 S&H
Junior Cup Semi Final Review |
|
The game of the day this weekend is the
all-Blades Super Draw County FA Taylor & Emmet Sunday Junior Cup tie
between Division One Redmires and Division Two Niagara at the Pheonix Sports
Ground, when Redmires will be trying to reach the final for a second time,
while for Niagara, the semi finals is a new experience. In Round One Nick
Hickson, Chris Cotterill and Ben Palmer goals gave Redmires a comfortable
3-0 victory at Ecclesfield Albion, but Niagara had a much closer affair with
Meadowhall Division Two leaders Penistone Church and after a Danny Cooper
goal had been cancelled out, they only squeezed through with a last minute
Danny Bainbridge goal. In Round Two, Niagara again had a close call.
Bainbridge and Simon Staniforth goals were both cancelled out by Norton, the
second when Brendan Burns put the ball into his own goal, but Bainbridge
saved his blushes though by heading Niagara's winner. Redmires had it much
easier at Hillsborough. An own goal set Redmires on their way and a Knaggs
double, along with Liam Clark and Richard Waga marking their debuts with
goals gave them a 5-0 victory. Round Three was a similar story for both of
them. Despite conceding for the first time in the competition, four Knaggs
goals and one each for Liam Clark and Andy Birks saw Redmires go comfortably
through against Wordswoth, but Niagara had another titanic tie at Anstonians.
A needless penalty, was tucked away by Bainbridge and Cooper doubled their
lead. Bainbridge hit them on the break for his second, but Anstonians
didn’t lie down though and helped by an own goal Ben Dronfield will have
nightmares about, they fought back to force the game into extra time. Dean
Constable put Niagara back in front only to see it cancelled out again, but
a late diving header by Scott Wostenholme saw Niagara finally go through. In
Round Four, Niagara fell behind at the Meadowhall’s John O Gaunt and
although Tom equalised, Niagara were behind again at the interval. A Jamie
Shepherd free kick brought Niagara level and in the final minute Cooper
calmly beat the keeper to put Niagara into the last sixteen. Redmires went
through at the expense of Division Two Junior Blades. James Kirkham headed
Redmires ahead after just five minutes and Ben Palmer doubled the lead. Luke
Siggs made it three before half time and although Richard Brailey pulled one
back for the Blades, Knaggs hit a fourth for Redmires. In the quarter
finals, for the first time,Niagara never looked in trouble against
Meadowhall League Ridgeway Athletic and took the lead with a Bainbridge
strike. Although Simon Staniforth had a penalty saved, Cooper soon grabbed
Niagara’s second and Bainbridge’s seventh in the competition came in the
final minute. Redmires had a much closer affair at Imperial League Earl
Marshall. Both sides were unbeaten before the tie and although Earl Marshall
took a half time lead from the penalty spot after Kirkham handled the ball
in the area, Redmires took the game into extra time when a defender turn a
Knaggs cross past his own keeper. With no further goals it went to penalties
and keeper Karl Taylor became the hero with two penalty saves. In the
quarter finals Niagara entertained Mexborough Wetherspoons and had a two
goal lead at half time with a Danny Cooper strike and a horrendous back pass
by a Mexborough defender that flew over his own keeper. The visitors hit
back after the break to draw level, but Niagara went back in front with a
Steve Simmons free kick. The visitors were struggling to cope with the pace
of the Niagara forwards and Cooper, Bainbridge and Staniforth added three
more. Ben Palmer gave Redmires the lead against Doncaster side Sprotbrough
and Dave Knaggs grabbed their second just before the break with a great solo
effort. Sprotbrough were back in the tie when they scored with ten minutes
remaining, but soon after, Andy Dalby crossed for Knaggs ninth of the
competition. Redmires’ Dave Knaggs and Niagara’s Danny Bainbridge are
going to be key to their sides’ chances, but in Luke Siggs and Simon
Staniforth, both sides have class elsewhere. Because Redmires have won every
game in Division One, they will start slight favourites, but Niagara have
dropped just two points in Division Two and have repeatedly shown they have
the resilience to beat many good sides, so it is likely to be very close

snow business like snow business |
|
The
2009/10 season has possibly seen the most amount of fixtures cancelled in
Redmires club history. With it snowing constantly from November 2009 to
March 2010, Redmires have only played 7 games in the last 4 months and the
fitness of the squad has reach an all time low with Del Siggs skinning many
players from his role of sweeper-keeper in training. Club captain Des Pike
has called for all players to follow his example, stay off the booze and
junk food, get regular exercise and if you are snowed in get out the
subbuteo and live the dream.

September 2007 Redmires
win the Merit Cup Final FACT |
|
The Steve Gee Merit Cup
went to CBC Premier Redmires as they overcame their Division One rivals
Handsworth Old Boys 3-1 in a top quality final at the Look Local Stadium,
Stocksbridge. The
game was just five minutes old when Sean Downing raced onto a through ball
to stroke the ball calmly past the Handsworth keeper, but if Redmires
thought they were going to have it all their own way, they were very much
mistaken. It was Handsworth that dominated the rest of the first half and
after both Dean Smith and Trevor Jones had gone close, just before the
break, Jones side-stepped a defender and the keeper to chip the equaliser. They weren't level for long
though as Redmires again started the half quickly and after an almighty
scramble in the Handsworth penalty area that saw the ball hit both the bar
and a post, the ball fell to Danny Lindley to smash Redmires back in front.
They extended their lead soon after when Andy Birks swivelled to fire home
and only a terrific goalline clearance by Karl Atkins stopped Rob Womack
adding a fourth. Handsworth did their best to get back into the game, but
Redmires keeper Karl Taylor only had one save of note to make and the trophy
went to Redmires.

July 2007 Pike's
gone fishing RUMOUR |
|
Following
the absence of Club Captain Des Pike from pre-season training, there have
been a number of rumours as to his whereabouts. Some suggest that Pike has
suffered a pre-season injury by playing three and in with his mate Jonesy,
others claim that he has gone on a "cruise" with team mate James
O'Connell to try and get his place back in midfield, whilst others simply
believe that he has gone on the same "Fishing Holiday" that he
went on last year through July and August.

With

game of the season at Stannington Village. Although Redmires finished two
places above Stannington last year and 13 points better off, the two league
meetings last season brought two tight battling games that both ending up
with score draws, so any result could be expected this time round.

2006 Welcome to
Wayne's World - FACT |
|
Recent
new signing Wayne Beggs has dramatically announced his arrival at the club
with two cracking goals in his last two games. His first came in the cup
defeat last week, which has already been described as goal of the season.
However, more importantly his goal in yesterdays windy League game against
Lord Nelson came with only two minutes to go and proved to be the winner. The win
has moved Redmires back up to fourth in the League (with games in hand!).
Party on! Excellent!

Despite
last weekend's cup defeat, Redmires have been making steady progress up the
table of late and although their hosts, Stocksbridge Park Steels, had a very
comfortable win in the cup, Redmires may get the result that would see them
really get among the title challengers.

2006 Hardisty
Pays the Penalty - RUMOUR |
|
Veteran Midfielder Mark Hardisty has reportable
gone into hiding after his clumsy late tackle in the dying minutes of the
game against Niagara almost cost Redmires the points. With less than ten
minutes remaining Hardisty was punished for his lack of pace and chopped
down a Niagara forward who had skipped past him in the box. Needless to say
the penalty was saved by “Safe Hands” Taylor, but it was no consolation
for Hardisty who walked from the field of play with his head down. Reports
have come in that Hardisty was last seen (still in his football kit) at
1.00am on Tuesday morning in the Hillsborough shopping area and we are
asking anyone who might have seen him to contact us immediately (we need his
kit back for Sunday).

claiming that it was a cut, he was then put through a pre game heading warm
up to make sure he was ok to play.

Taylor
gets plastered - RUMOUR |
|
Goalkeeper Karl Taylor has confirmed that his great start to the season has
to be put down to his pre-season training regime. Taylor commented "I
have to thank the Coaching of Luke Siggs, he informed me at the start of the
season that I needed to improve my strength over the summer and then set me
a strict training regime to achieve my goal... First I set about plastering
four walls in his bathroom, followed by plastering the ceiling, then I had
to fit two windows for him, tidy his cellar, hoover his lounge and wash the
dishes... all in one day". Taylor continued "I've found muscles I
never knew I had, but the worst thing is Siggs has lined me up plastering
jobs for 3 other players in the side (Gambling, Milnes and Lawrence) I'm
sure he's making a cut of the earnings!" Siggs was unavailble for
comment although his answer phone message did say "For all your
plastering needs contact Karl Taylor on 0114 2** **** Quote SIGGS for
special discount".

considerable disadvantage next year as it will be forced to get fit and
learn to pass. Additional strain will also be put on the players as they
will now have to come up with more plausible excuses instead of ''it hit a

to this, the Club Secretary will be drafting up a new set of acceptable
excuses for use during the coming season. |

| Rumors are rife that Luke Siggs has taken up a
pact with the Devil in order to break his scoring drought. In recent
games, the opposition have complained that Siggs has been trying to summon
the Lord of Darkness. Shouts of "Six, Six, Six"
have been heard during matches and Siggs has taken up a close friendship
with team
vampire, Ashton Woodhouse, However, Siggs has defended himself by
saying he is being mis-quoted and is really calling "Siggs, Siggs,
Siggs". Coincidentally, Siggs has now scored in the last two games
since the rumors began. |

September 2001 Din in
Award Bid - RUMOUR |
| Following an announcement by the Redmires
Management Team that a 'Miss of the Season' award would be up for grabs at
the end of the season, several players have lodged early entries for the prestigious
trophy. In an action packed game against Florist yesterday and despite
scoring eight goals, several players distinguished themselves with a
notable six yard crossbar hitting screamer from Dave Naisbit being one of
the most popular choices. However, the pick of the day and a certain
finalist at the end of the season was a superbly taken one yard, open net,
slice against the post by Zahid Din. |

September 2001 'Siggs
Six' may not be enough -
RUMOUR |
| A story leaked by a senior member of Redmires's
coaching staff suggests that the team's strike force may be in for a
change around. The performance of the present strike pair, Walton and
Siggs has included a 'Siggs Six' which formed part of the ten goals
they have scored between them in the last two league games. However, the
Management Team is said to be unimpressed and following the recent goal
scoring frenzy of would-be pretenders, Din and Davies, it appears that
Siggs's and Walton's days may be numbered. |

Football Kit Fetish - RUMOUR |
| In a new twist in the turbulent career of David 'Lord

concerns that the left back with a famous football kit fetish, has absconded
with part of the Redmires team strip. Teams being approached by an
individual wearing a Top Hat, Monocle and either a Redmires home of
away strip are being asked to contact Redmires Team Manager, John Davies

Walton
Firing Blanks!
- RUMOUR |
| Last year's leading scorer has started the pre season
warm-up with a goal drought. Walton has so far failed to score in open
play whilst strike partner and arch rival, Luke Siggs netted a hat-trick
in Redmires's mid-week win against High Green. 'An inability to
perform effects most strikers at some time in their career, and the
cause is often psychological rather than physical. Walton is probably
going through a period of low self esteem and it is important for his
strike partner to be understanding' lied leading German 'performance'
expert, Dr Ralph Fussballspielen. |
