Club History Originally a junior football club, Redmires FC was formed from Hallam Rangers in 1983 by Roger Milnes. The team's original home ground was based at the Redmires Playing Fields on Redmires Road in Sheffield. The 1983 team played in the Under 13 Redgates Junior Sunday league.
In 1985 Roger Milnes formed a second junior team again competing in the Redgates League. Both teams continued up to Under 18 level. In 1988 the 1985 team merged with Viners Football Club who were playing in the Sunday Sports League. After just two seasons in division 1 the newly formed Redmires team were promoted to the premier league after finishing in the runners up spot. Redmires struggled to hold there own in the top flight and for the next few seasons just manage to avoid relegation.
1994-95 brought Redmires there most successful season to date. A cup final place loomed, but a last minute goal against Ecclesfield White Bear denied them of glory and a cup final at Bramall Lane. In that same season Redmires finished 4th in the premier league.
Following the relative success of the previous year, Redmires began to lose some of there best players. In 1995-96 the team completed the season with a mid-table spot. In the 96-97 season more players began to leave the sinking ship and consequently Redmires seven year stay in the premier league finally came to an end.
1997-98 brought the arrival of a new manager and a influx of new players. Most of the new players arrived from the Under 17 Redmires Team. Unfortunately the young players found it very difficult to cope with the jump to the adult league with Redmires fortunate to avoid the drop.
1998-99 Redmires finished just above mid-table in Division 1.
1999-2000, Redmires were left without a manager and a sponsor. Again, like in previous seasons, Redmires were struggling to field 11 players on a Sunday morning. After a depressing and grueling season, Redmires were relegated to division 3.
The 2000-01 season brought John Davies to the club to act as player manager. Other new players to arrive included, Pete Walton, Steve Fife and Dave Naisbitt. Paul Taylor and Luke Siggs also returned to the club to provide a potent strike force. With only 3 defeats all season and over 100 league goals to their credit, Redmires went on to win the title by 6 points. Pete Walton finished the season with an impressive 39 goals and Luke Siggs also bagged himself 30 goals.
2001-2002. With high expectations from the previous season, Redmires were tipped to take the 1st division title. Redmires started poorly when they were defeated 3-2 on the opening game of the season to Handsworth OB. An unlucky 3-2 defeat followed in the merit cup final to the eventual Premier champions Laycock Sports. Redmires also fell at the first hurdle in both cups. Morale was temporally lifted with two back to back wins against Inter Florist 11-0 and 8-0 respectively. Redmires title hopes were raised with five wins and a draw during the middle part of the season. This was to be the only high point. Redmires title and promotion challenge failed with a poor set of results during the latter part of the season. Redmires finished in fourth place - just one point off the runners-up spot. The 2001-2202 campaign turned out to be a season of underachieving. 2003-2004. Del Siggs took over as manager from John Davies and after 3 pre season matches things looked set for a fair season. Ashton Woodhouse had decided to hang up his boots, as did Dave Naisbitt after one game but new signing Chris Copland looked a good signing. Up to the end of December results were mixed. The best game was a battling 4-4 draw with Freedom House who were later promoted. After Christmas things began to improve. We ended up finishing 5th in the League only just missing out on promotion. The thing that possibly cost us promotion was our tendency to give away early goals which always seemed to leave us with a lot to do. We had heard that Yew Tree who we had beaten twice in the League were folding at the end of the season and there were at least 5 decent players who would be looking for a new club the following season and overtures were made to certain players. Two of them (Simon Bradbury and John Dale) impressed in an end of season friendly against Premier League and Cup winners Stannington Village which we won 3-2 albeit they did not have their strongest team out. Things looked good for the next season. 2004-2005. There were quite a few new faces for pre season training at the beginning of July and the players under the coaching of Luke Siggs responded well and there seemed a good buzz about the squad. We had lost Chris Copland, Chris Cotterill and Mark Critchley who all went on their travels but with a promise they would return to play again. The lads from Yew Tree proved to be very good acquisitions for the team. Redmires also signed goalkeeper Karl Taylor who replaced the long serving Paul Oxley who left the team for personnel reasons. One look at Taylor in a pre season friendly was enough to show that he was an outstanding keeper. The pre season friendly's went very well against higher opposition except for one where to much chopping and changing of players led to a heavy defeat. As it turned out, Redmires gained promotion back to the Premier Division in the runners up spot, losing two games by the odd goal and only conceding 15 goals. In addition Redmires became only the 2nd team ever from this League to reach the final of the County Junior Cup in doing so beating the previously unbeatable Woodhouse West End (who had won 37 games on the trot) 2-1 in the semi final. We lost the final but a great effort out of 187 teams who started in this Cup. The pleasing aspect of the season was that despite several longish injuries to certain players the squad was strong enough to win most of their games including a 4-1 League cup win over Woodhouse George who went on to win the Premier league only losing one game and scoring over one hundred goals. A SEASON TO REMEMBER. 2006-2007. Things did
not look too good at the beginning of the season, although pre season training
had gone well in July with good attendances, the friendlies in August yielded only
one win against Oxspring Lorwood. The first match in the league was against old
rivals |
